While lots of moms say their families don’t make a lot of plans for Mother’s Day, celebrating this holiday is a great way to bring family together for a fun-filled day of activities, food and relaxing – all in the name of mom! This year, organize a “Sunday Fun-day” that the whole family can enjoy. (Moms, feel free to pass this article on to your children or husband, as it sounds as if they may need a few tips!)
BRUNCH IN BED
Let’s start from the beginning. For something extra-special, let mom sleep in and treat her to a relaxing breakfast-in-bed. A baked dish with eggs and veggies like this Asparagus-Potato Brunch Bake [http://greengiant.com/recipes/detail/asparagus-potato-brunch-bake] doesn’t require a lot of prep, and it will be hearty enough to keep everyone going through the activities of the day. Bring Mom her food on a tray, plus her favorite juice, berries, toast and coffee or tea while everyone else cleans up the kitchen and gets ready for a fun-filled day.
OUTDOOR ADVENTURE
After breakfast, suggest an active family activity, like a hike or bike ride in a local nature preserve or park. The weather in May is usually beautiful, and your family can enjoy flowers in bloom and a breathe of fresh air. Pack a picnic lunch: Grill zucchini, squash and red peppers for veggie sandwiches before leaving the house. Later, you can assemble them in pita bread or Ciabbata with salt, pepper and hummus.
GATHER ‘ROUND THE TABLE
When everyone is pooped, head back to the house for an intimate family dinner. Don’t let Mom get saddled with kitchen duty. Beforehand, plan a menu with a few of her favorite foods, or surprise her with something new! Consider something simple and fresh like this Seven-Layer Chinese Chicken Salad, or some hot and spicy corn as a flavorful side dish.
GAME NIGHT
After dinner, break out the board games or sit down for a round of charades. Before the fun ends, surprise mom with favorite dessert. This is the time to make Mom feel special, and every mom enjoys it when the whole family gets together, gets along, and makes new memories over games and good food.
How will you celebrate?
